Thanks to all of the composers who submitted materials. The winner will be announced by January 16, 2009.

AME Announces its Fourth Annual Composition Competition

Receipt Deadline: December 15, 2008, 6PM EST

For our program on April 27, 2009, we invite American composers (North, Central and South American citizens, or U.S. Permanent Residents holding Green Cards) age 35 and younger as of the deadline to submit one or two compositions up to 15 minutes in length. Works may use any combination of soprano, baritone, flute (doubling piccolo and alto flute), clarinet (doubling e-flat and bass clarinet), violin, cello, percussion and piano. Preference will be given to smaller works (1-5 players) incorporating humor, but all works within the guidelines will be considered. Works may have been previously awarded, performed, recorded or published, professionally or otherwise, but may not have been premiered or performed in New York City. Works not adhering to these guidelines or within this specific instrumentation will be disqualified.

Directions for Submitting Materials

We prefer receiving works via email as PDFs, MP3s (for sound files) or MS Word files. Works may also be mailed via regular mail, however please do not send materials requiring a signature.

If emailing materials, please enclose all files (MP3s, PDFs and any documents) in a single folder titled exactly as follows (replacing the word 'Pseudonym' with your real pseudonym):

AME-Competition-2008-Pseudonym

Email as a Zip file, which will place the suffix .zip at the end of the folder name. To create a Zip file on a PC in Windows XP, select the folder, then right-click and select "Send To" and "Compressed (zipped) Folder"; on a Macintosh in OSX, Control-click on the file and choose Create Archive. The email subject line should be titled exactly like the folder (i.e., AME-Competition-2008-Pseudonym).

NOTE: please send as a Zip file attached to an email message (our server is set up to handle large files). Do not send using a file delivery site such as yousendit, sendbigfile, etc. unless absolutely necessary.

Please Submit:

1. One or two scores, labeled with pseudonyms, including the duration and year written, and a program note (500 words or less).

2. Recording(s) (optional, but recommended, high-quality MIDI acceptable), labeled with your pseudonym and title of the work and movements, if applicable. All movements should be on separate tracks. Recordings should be in MP3 format, enclosed in the Zip file, or sent as a CD recording via regular mail. Each MP3/track should be one piece or movement and only labeled with the title of the work and/or movement. MP3 is the only acceptable format when emailing sound files.

3. Biography and List of Works and Performances. Please include your name, pseudonym, address, phone number, and e-mail. If mailed via regular mail, please enclose in a sealed envelope labled with your pseudonym.

4. An appropriate SASE, if you submit materials via regular mail and would like your works and recordings returned. Works and recordings submitted without an SASE will either be kept in our files or discarded.

Composers will be notified by January 16, 2009.

The winning composer must attend the dress rehearsal and performance in New York City and will need to submit a photocopy of a Passport or Driver's License indicating proof of age and American citizenship or Permanent Resident status. Non-permanent residents and previous winners of this competition may not apply.

An honorarium of $500 will be awarded.

Applications not conforming to these guidelines will be disqualified.
